Role Summary

Free People is seek an Associate Designer for our Intimates team!  The Associate Designer plays a key role in supporting the design process, from initial concept to final production, working closely with the Assistant Design Director and Associate Design Manager to bring our collections to life. This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about fashion and eager to contribute to the development of Free People Intimates collections.
 

The Associate Designer Intimates will actively participate and support the overall design process and workflow as well as designing, sewing/ mocking original ideas for key meetings, as well as support the team with any design related tasks with a strong focus around Slips and Bodysuits.  This role is based on site in Philadelphia, PA.

Role Responsibilities

  • Support the development process of private label products & support w/ market and in-house developments for the Intimates slips/ body product line. Key focus will be around supporting workload of the overall design process, creation, development, and execution of Free People Intimates' own-brand slips and bodysuits categories.
  • Contribution to the design process including sketching new ideas, researching new trends to move the product forward and utilizing Ai platforms to increase creative research (such as MidJourney) to execute original design ideas and specific design development projects as assigned by the Design Director.
  • Support presentations through the execution of sewing, draping, and mocking; bringing key ideas to life and participating in research and reporting on industry trend direction, color direction, and fabric innovations that can relate to the Free People target customer as assigned by the Design Director.
  • The Intimates category touches several fabrications and aesthetics, and a successful candidate will have a strong understanding of knits & woven fabrication’s base and construction. As well as excellent knowledge of construction, fit, and fabric characteristics of these materials.
  • Communicating daily with cross functional team as well as market vendors on status of sourcing/ developments to ensure product stays in line with development timeline.
  • Set up spec sheets for all private label product & market developments as well as maintain and update BOMs as needed.  
  • Execute Design packs including fabric placement charts, trim color cards, trim sourcing/development, embellishment and embroidery layouts and placements.
  • Oversee trim approvals, ensuring quality and color submissions meet brand expectations.

Role Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Design with related field experience preferred.
  • 3+ Years industry experience required. (Experience within Intimates category would be a plus).
  • Creativity & Trend:
    • High level of creativity & strong sense and understanding of Fashion Trends and how it could translate to the Free People customer. Ability to identify new trends and how those can relate to Intimates category.
    • Passionate about designing, constantly pushing new ideas, concepts as well as agility to respond to new business objectives and adapt accordingly.
    • An elevated taste level and keen eye for color, trend and detail.
  • Fabric/Sewing knowledge:
    • Ability to drape, mock and sewing skills are a must for this role.
    • Knowledge of garment construction is key!
    • Knowledge across knits and wovens fabrications are a must
    • Strong sense of technical design understanding/passion for technical construction and elevating finishing details on garments that are consistent to the Free People aesthetic.
  • Technology Skills:
    • Excellent technical & hand/computer sketching/ CAD skills in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop as well as Procreate.
    • Ai knowledge/experience would be a plus! (MidJourney, PromeAi, etc.)
    • Proficient in Microsoft/Google platforms (Excel, Powerpoint, Word, Outlook)
  • Soft Skills:
    • Must be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment, flexibility and agility are key strengths we’re looking for.
    • Strong sense of organizational skills, self-starter with the ability to function independently as well as in a team-based environment
    • Proactive and self-motivated is a must for this role
    • Strong sense of organizational skills and proactiveness, great communication skills and ability to multitask & manage multiple project deadlines simultaneously.
    • Great attention to detail and understanding of sense of urgency and deadlines
    • Upbeat, positive attitude, great team player and ability to be flexible is key!
  • Ability to work on site 5 days per week in Philadelphia, PA.
