Free People is seeking a temporary Assistant Designer whose primary responsibility is to support in facilitating the development process of private label and market developments, and to support the Design Manager with both market and in-house developments for the Foundation & Seamless product line within the Intimates category, with a strong focus on fitting, sewing, and executing new ideas.
Contributing to the design process by sketching new ideas using Procreate and Adobe programs (Illustrator, Photoshop), researching trends, and leveraging AI platforms such as Midjourney, Prome, and New Arc to enhance creative research.
Supporting the seasonal development calendar in partnership with the Designer by creating original artwork, developing seasonal trims, and executing thoughtful design ideas that advance the product through silhouette, fabrication, and details.
Assisting in the preparation and organization of weekly development packages for vendors and updating Bills of Materials (BOM) as necessary.
Communicating daily with cross-functional teams and market vendors to ensure styles in development meet design specifications and stay on schedule within the development process.
Demonstrating an understanding of business goals related to product designs and supporting the Design Lead in all execution areas.
Reviewing incoming garments with the Designer and facilitating communication with Product Development partners to ensure products align with the original design intent and brand standards.
Assisting in sample preparation for monthly sales review meetings by collaborating with the Designer to create innovative presentations that clearly communicate the line to Buyers and Brand leaders.
Supporting the execution of original design ideas through draped and sewn mocks in preparation for key meetings.
Performing special projects and tasks as needed.
Bachelor’s degree in Fashion
Excellent hand sketching and computer CAD skills, proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Procreate
AI knowledge/experience is a plus (e.g., MidJourney, PromeAI)
Strong sewing and draping skills are essential, along with a basic understanding of patternmaking
Solid technical design expertise and passion for garment construction
Experience with knits, wovens, and lace fabrications is required; seamless experience is a plus
Proactive, self-motivated, and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment
Strong organizational and communication skills are essential
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
Background and experience in Intimates and/or Foundation preferred
1–4 years of relevant experience
Location: On-site, 5 days a week at Navy Yard – Building 25
