Role Summary

As the Senior Director of Editorial Copy, you will lead the editorial strategy and execution for a retail business that includes all customer facing brand copy that supports our brand voice across all channels including stores, social media, paid digital, and online.    

You will oversee the creation, development, and delivery of high-quality written content that aligns with the brand's voice and drives customer engagement across all communication customer touchpoints—digital and physical. You will manage a team of copywriters and editors while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams such as marketing, merchandising, product design, and store design to ensure consistent and impactful content experience. Your role will be pivotal in shaping the brand’s narrative, optimizing user experience, and enhancing the customer journey through compelling storytelling and persuasive copy. 

Role Responsibilities

Editorial Strategy and Leadership: 

  • Lead the development of the editorial strategy for brand campaigns and product-related content across stores, media, and online channels, including the website, email marketing, product descriptions, blogs, social media, and digital ads. 
  • Ensure all content is aligned with brand voice, tone, and overarching marketing objectives while engaging and converting the target audience. 
  • Drive content innovation and ensure editorial consistency across all touchpoints and platforms, tailored to the audience for that platform. 

Team Management and Development: 

  • Manage, mentor, and lead a team of copywriters and editors providing functional expertise and guidance as well as professional development growth. 
  • Establish clear content guidelines, workflows, and quality standards to ensure high-quality output across the team. 
  • Collaborate with external writers, agencies, and freelancers as needed to scale content efforts. 

Cross-functional Collaboration: 

  • Work closely across fellow Marketing partners including the brand marketing team, performance/digital marketing, and brand creative and collateral to ensure copy is both effective from a brand tone and voice standpoint, but also SEO-optimized to deliver best possible searchability.     
  • Collaborate with the digital marketing team to create compelling content for paid media campaigns, outbound marketing (email, app push, sms), and social media platforms. 
  • Partner with the product and merchandising teams to integrate product detail and selling point that help drive conversion and sales both in store and online. 

Online Content Optimization: 

  • Implement best practices for content optimization, including SEO, keyword research, and UX/UI considerations, to improve content visibility and search rankings. 
  • Analyze performance metrics for content effectiveness, user engagement, and conversion rates to continually optimize and refine editorial strategies. 
  • Stay up-to-date with e-commerce trends, customer behavior insights, and digital content best practices to enhance content performance and drive customer loyalty. 

Brand Voice and Storytelling: 

  • Ensure a consistent and authentic brand voice across all consumer touchpoints. 
  • Develop and implement strategies to leverage storytelling to create a deeper emotional connection with customers, fostering brand loyalty and long-term engagement. 

Editorial Content Calendar: 

  • Oversee the editorial content calendar, ensuring timely and strategic delivery of content across all channels, platforms and marketing campaigns. 
  • Align editorial priorities with business goals and seasonal campaigns (e.g., product launches, promotions, holiday sales).

Quality Assurance: 

  • Review and approve all content to ensure it meets quality standards, is free from errors, and is aligned with the brand’s messaging. 
  • Maintain editorial best practices and guidelines to ensure consistency in style, tone, and grammar across all content.

Role Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in editorial, copywriting, or content strategy, with at least 5 years in a leadership role, preferably in a retail or e-commerce environment. 
  • Proven experience in managing and attracting talent and developing high-performing content and editorial teams. 
  • Strong background in e-commerce content strategy, digital marketing, and SEO best practices. 
  • Expertise in product copywriting, storytelling, and creating content that drives conversion and enhances customer experience. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or related field. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Strong ability to connect with peers and partners, as well as support and nurture those on the copy/editorial team  
  • Strong listening skills with deep curiosity and desire to learn and understand while also lead with passion and conviction.   
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships across multiple cross functional teams through a combination of strong organizational and strong influencing skills. 
  • Ability to adapt, prioritize, and always deliver in a nimble, fast-paced environment 
  • Solution oriented and results driven.    
  • Clear and concise presentation skills who can proudly represent our brand internally and externally.
