Role Summary

URBN is searching for a Packaging Engineer to join the Global Supply Chain organization. The Packaging Engineer designs, tests, and implements packaging solutions that are an integral part of the organization’s Production and Supply Chain network. This individual develops, designs, and tests standards and guidelines for developing packaging solutions for the organization’s products. The position is expected to investigate multiple options and assess corresponding benefits, drawbacks, and risks of each and provide a recommended best technical and business solution.

Role Responsibilities

  • Leads and executes the planning, research, development, testing, and documentation required to implement highly-effective packaging solutions for new and existing products
  • Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging.
  • Develop channel and brand specific packaging format strategies
  • Evaluate and recommend packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews.
  • Partner with brands and Production to ensure packaging requirements are considered in new product launches.
  • Evaluate end to end supply chain speed and cost tradeoffs related to packaging to optimize both packaging design and packaging location
  • Identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage.
  • Work closely with Procurement to optimize packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance and compliance with regulatory, and internal requirements.
  • Specify and recommend efficiency tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging designs.

Role Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Sciences or Engineering ideal (Packaging, Mechanical or related engineering science)
  • 3+ years experience in a packaging productivity engineering field (preferably in the retail industry) with procurement operational experience and project management
